A wireless network allows several computers to share one high-speed Internet connection. To create a wireless network, a router may be connected to the cable, DSL or satellite modem. To connect to the wireless network, a computer system must have a wireless network adapter.
How a Router Works
· A wireless router is a hardware device that allows multiple computers to connect to a network. The router serves data packets to each computer, and responds to Internet page and data requests from the computers connected to the router's local area network. Many wireless routers allow for both wired and wireless connections.
How a Network Adapter Works
· A network adapter allows a computer to communicate with a local area network. A computer system may contain more than one network adapter; however, a computer system must contain at least one network adapter to communicate with the network. A network adapter is encoded with a special identifier called a Media Access Control, or "MAC", address. Each MAC address is unique to the network adapter. This MAC address identifies the network adapter to either a modem or a router.
Router Communications
· The router communicates with the cable, DSL, or satellite modem. When a computer system makes a request for data, the router forwards the request to the modem, and the modem retrieves the data from the Internet. When the router communicates with the computers connected to the local area network, the router stores the MAC addresses of each network adapter communicating with the router. As the data enters the local area network, the router forwards the data to the requesting computer system, and processes any requests for data from the computer afterward.
Network Adapter Communications
· A network adapter receives communication data packets going from the router to the computer, and forwards data packets going from the computer to the router. In the case of multiple network adapters connected to a single computer system (such as with a file or network server), each network adapter communicates with the router separately.
Benefits
· A wireless router allows a computer with an installed wireless network adapter to connect to the local area network without a hard-wired connection. This allows a computer user to place the computer anywhere within the radio transmission range of the wireless router.
